Cleaner Energy - We're getting there
The World Economic Forum has recently reported that in 2023, global renewable capacity grew by 50%, representing the fastest rate of growth in 20 years.
Â
What is cleaner or renewable energy?
Â
It is energy derived from natural sources that are replenished at a higher rate than they are consumed. Examples include Solar, Wind, Geothermal, Hydro, Ocean and Bio energy.
Â
Energy from fossil fuels on the other hand (Coal, Oil and Gas) are non renewable resources, and when burned to produce energy, they cause harmful greenhouse gas emissions e.g. carbon dioxide. Â
Â
While the share of electricity generation from renewable energy is growing, it has been slow to climb to 30%. The good news is that with the current capacity generation momentum, it is likely to hit 50% by 2030. The share from fossil fuels will fall from >60% to about 40%, with the remainder made up by nuclear energy.  Â
Â
The momentum is clear
Â
By next year, renewable sources are likely to surpass Coal as the primary source of electricity generation for the first time, and currently for every dollar that is invested in new fossil fuel generation, $1.70 is being invested in cleaner energy sources. That was 1:1 less than 5 years ago.
Â
Cleaner or renewable energy is our future, and we have to change our mindset towards it. Too many arguments are made against renewable energy while never acknowledging the clear fact that fossil fuel sources are non renewable and are emitting harmful emissions which cause global warming and air pollution.
Â
We all have a choice whether to support renewable energy – make the right choice. I’m supporting renewable energy all the way. Â
